Friends of Bathurst Basin was formed as a community group to ask Bristol City Council not to moor an outsize barge, the Ebenhaezer, along the eastern quay of Bathurst Basin. Our campaign was successful. However, the ‘No Mooring’ sign has recently been removed and mooring rings along the quay wall painted. As the Harbour Place Shaping Strategy (Waterspace Plan) included proposals for new commercial moorings along the Lower Guinea Street harbour wall, we were concerned that this was about to happen.
On 28th May we met the Interim Harbour Master, Tony Moore, to raise our concerns. He explained that the no-mooring status of this wall was to allow it to be used for fishing and circumstances are now very different. The 2008 Mooring Policy document will shortly be updated.

We suggested that mooring on the Lower Guinea Street quay should be restricted to narrow-beam leisure craft only and limited to the wall south of the quay-side ladder. This would allow a 50 metre turning circle close to the Basin entrance and give sufficient space for the Avon Scout & Guide Canoe Club and other recreational users to use the area for training young kayakers, canoeists and paddle-boarders, with parents watching from the quayside.
