The Harbour Masters Office routine pontoon inspection identified a structural problem with the main span of pontoons at Bathurst Basin. A fuller inspection revealed issues that could not readily be rectified. As a result all vessels on the central pontoon have been moored elsewhere in the Basin or the Harbour.
The Harbour Master explained: ‘Continued use of the defective structure was considered an intolerable risk; so for the time being all vessels have been asked to relocate to alternative moorings in Bathurst Basin and the wider harbour. Our intention moving forward is to replace the pontoons with new ones and we are currently seeking quotes from suppliers.’
