Bathurst Bridge renovation

As part of a £16 million programme funded by the UK government, 8 bridges across the Avon New Cut are being restored, including the swing-bridge part of the Bathurst Basin Bridge. Work will start on this bridge on 3rd March 2025 and is expected to take up to 2 years to complete.

The restoration of the Bathurst Basin Bridge will cost around £1.3 million and includes

  • removing the concrete decking and timber footpath;
  • grit blasting the paint and corrosion;
  • repairing the bridge’s structure using bespoke parts that need to be fabricated off-site;
  • repainting and weatherproofing the bridge;
  • adding a high friction road surface and road markings.

Throughout the closure, road traffic and pedestrians will be directed across the fixed bridge that runs alongside the swing bridge. Traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic signals. The Council website states that ‘these signals will be responsive to traffic build-ups and will be manually operated at peak times.’ We can expect major disruption for two years or more.
