Redcliffe Wharf development in doubt

Redcliffe Wharf is a substantial undeveloped area of the Harbour owned by the City Council since the Middle Ages. Planning permission was granted in 2021 for 45 apartments, an array of retail outlets and restaurants, an office building and 12 new moorings. Preliminary work started in April last year but it now appears that the proposed development is not viable. Full details on Bristol 24/7.

The wharf had been the site of a boat-building firm. The replica of the Matthew was constructed here between 1994 and 1996 and its keel was laid here by the Duke of Edinburgh. Some residents will recall that the wharf was once the site of an ‘urban beach’, where Bristolians could enjoy their beer in deckchairs overlooking the floating Harbour (image below).
