The Bathurst Basin floating reed bed is now well established and, given the fish and birds moving in and out, seems to be assisting biodiversity and protecting small birds from gull predation as intended. As a result we have asked the Harbour Master for permission to install a second reed bed in the Basin. The Eardstapa Trust would again be open to considering funding the costs.
Ben Wookey, the Deputy Harbour Master, responded to our request: ‘We will not be considering any new reed beds in the Bathurst basin at this time.’ No reason was given but he added: ‘I would imagine that we could be open to the possibility at some point in the future.’
