Bathurst Basin’s central pontoon was found to be defective following a routine inspection. In the image above the Harbour Master’s team are removing the defective pontoon from the Basin. After several days the work was completed and the Basin is now without a central pontoon, as shown in the image below. The Basin hasn’t been this empty since 1959 when Cabot Cruising Club made the John Sebastian its headquarters.
Additional reed bed
Friends of Bathurst Basin are hoping to add a second reed bed to the Basin and funding for one has been arranged. The first reed bed was installed in May 2021 by Aquascience. The Harbour Master will re-consider installing a second reed bed when the new pontoon is in place.
The first reed bed has has been home to a number of Basin wild-life residents. According to Cabot Cruising Club commodore, ‘our resident moorhens (Mango and Mr Mango) have had two broods this year. They used the reed bed for the second brood’s nest, and the family spend time in there everyday. Any additional reed beds would be most welcome by Cabot Cruising Club.’
