Bathurst Swing Bridge, which was closed in the spring of 2025, has re-opened much to the delight of those living in or travelling through the area.
Built in 1905, it carried one-way road traffic and pedestrians between Wapping Road, Cumberland Road and Commercial Road. According to the City Council, the restoration work included:
- removing the concrete decking and timber footpath
- covering the bridge and grit blasting the paint and corrosion off
- repairing the bridge’s structure using bespoke parts that need to be fabricated off-site
- repainting and weatherproofing the bridge
- adding a high friction road surface and road markings
The restoration of the bridge has been commemorated with this sign on the Bathurst Basin side of the bridge.
