A small number of birds have been recovered from Bristol’s Floating Harbour following a suspected outbreak of avian botulism, first identified in St George Park. The first suspected case was reported on 27th August by Bath Swan Rescue.
Tim Trew, Chair of the Harbour Stragegy Group, has informed us that numbers remain relatively low in the Harbour and are being closely monitored:
- Daily inspections and carcass recovery operations have been undertaken where required.
- Harbour Authority staff continue to work alongside wildlife welfare organisations, including Bath Swan Rescue.
Since the initial reports, rainfall has significantly increased river inflows to the harbour. Combined with dredging and scour operations, this has increased water movement across the Harbour – considered a positive factor, reducing stagnant conditions that can contribute to the persistence of avian botulism.
Although the risk to the public is low, dead birds should not be handled but reported to the Council on 0117 9222 000.
