The reed beds installed in May are continuing to prosper, as our image above reveals. When installing the beds, Simon Thurgood of Aquascience predicted that moorhens would soon occupy the beds.
It’s taken some time, but the Basin’s resident moorhen (image below) is now exploring the extra greenery. We hope this will provide a safer place for them to raise their young.
William Ritchie reports seeing three moorhen chicks being fed on the reed bed, one of them in his photo below.
